LENT | ASH WEDNESDAY

After the sparkle of Christmas and before the pastels of Easter there is the in-between time of Lent. The season where some people give things up and go hangry while others decide to start a devotional, a ritual, a practice to deepen their faith. Or it can be a time of neither deprivation or abundance -- it can be a time to dig into the spiritual soil.

We always have a theme for Lent at DOWNTOWN CHURCH. And this year we decided it was dirt. Yep. Just dirt. Ashy, dusty, red clay, rich, sandy, muddy, gritty — dirt. Earth. Land. Wilderness. Grime. Earth-worm filled dirt.

Don't worry, we aren't going to bring bags of dirt into church or make you test the soil in your yard for nutrients. But we are inviting you to start the Lenten season with some dust and ash — remnants of dirt on your forehead.

Ash Wednesday has been a lot of things to us in the past 9 years, a somber service of reflection, a musical experiment on a street corner, a failed attempt at Co-preaching in the same service.

And this year we are keeping it simple and letting the Holy Spirit set the tone while we provide the music, the liturgy and the dirt.
