WORSHIP | RECESS

Back in the day, when the metal bell would ring, we would run outside to the fresh air. We’d scatter on the playground, chasing each other to the swings or choosing teams for kickball. Some kids braided wildflower bracelets. Everyone got a chance to breathe some fresh air and pick whatever they wanted to do (or not do) for a while. It was unstructured time. It was freedom. It was glorious.

DOWNTOWN CHURCH has very few customs, but taking recess is one of them. For as long as most of us can remember, we have hit pause for two full weeks during the summer (always around the 4th of July). During those two weeks, we do not gather together for worship at Central Energy. Instead, we do something different. We invite a friend to brunch or we choose to sleep in. We meet strangers at the playground. We take a road trip to explore a different town’s coffee shops and places of worship. If you’re really, really missing your Sunday rhythm with DOWNTOWN CHURCH, you can go for a walk and listen to the podcast. Find an old episode and see how God speaks to you now.

Recess is more than a break from worship. It’s a two week break from the operation of running the church. The church, which is an organization, requires rest. Creativity breeds in rest. DOWNTOWN CHURCH requires creativity.

So, mark the dates on your calendar and don’t show up here on Sundays - July 7 + 14.

A pastor will be available for emergencies.
