Signs, Signs, Everywhere Are Signs
"Signs, signs, everywhere are signs. Blocking out the scenery, breakin' my mind. Do this. Don't do that. Can't you read the signs?"
[divider]No. I can’t. I’m one of those people constantly looking for signs. I ask for them, pray for them, seek them out… and then ignore them. It’s like that movie with Jim Carrey where he’s driving down the road and asking God out loud for a sign, any sign at all. Meanwhile he’s passing sign after sign with warnings like “turn back,” “danger ahead,” “impending death awaits!” Okay, I made that last one up. But the signs are all there and he doesn’t see them, even though he’s asking for them.
I don’t believe every quirky encounter or random event qualifies as a sign. However, if you ask for one and then dismiss what follows as coincidence, be prepared to give yourself a swift kick later. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.” We can ask God to show us which path to take and fully expect an answer. But listening and responding must ensue. Else we find ourselves heading in the wrong direction, looking back over our shoulders at the signs we ignored.
