SERMON SERIES: BELONGING
One of our core human needs is to belong to each other, to something greater than ourselves, and to God. Yet, we often find ourselves isolated, hurt, and lonely. This sermon series takes a look at philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's porcupine dilemma. Schopenhauer observed porcupines huddling together for warmth on a cold day. As they drew near to each other, their quills poked and drew blood. He watched their movement - closer for warmth and survival and then away to isolate and heal from wounds. We mimic this behavior in our intimate relationships. We draw close to one another for warmth and survival and then we retreat away to heal from the inevitable wounds we inflict on one another. Together, using the scripture of Philippians, we will ask where God is in this human dance and in particular, what God has to do with our healing as individuals, as a community, as a city.
