WORSHIP l NAPKINS
Written by Dawn Hyde
My three year old’s favorite thing to do before a meal is get the cloth napkins. He picks out a color for each person at the table. It’s a small gesture, but reminds me of the value of paying attention to the details. When he chooses our napkins, he is making note of everyone at the table and he is quite literally marking a space for each of us.
A napkin's basic function is to be used to clean up messes and yet, it can also be the mark of welcome to guests that you’ve created space for them to come be with you. For us, who follow Jesus, napkins can remind us of the cloth Jesus used before his last supper to wash and dry each of his disciples’ feet.
When we come together for the Lord’s Supper, it’s important to me that we take care in choosing a napkin. Of course a paper napkin you can pick up at the corner gas station would be just as holy as anything else. Jesus can make anything holy. It’s not the price or quality that matters. For me, it is the story and the intention behind how we invite one another to come and be with us.
This Sunday in worship you’ll notice a few things:
We’ll have real bread and juice/wine.
And that bread will be shared on a pop of color and design - a napkin designed by Amy Moore.
Amy Moore is a charter member of DOWNTOWN CHURCH. This means she is an early adopter and entrepreneur. She went first believing that God is up to something good in and through us. Amy has traveled to Ethiopia with DOWNTOWN CHURCH and knows how often art (and coffee) tell us a story of a people. She currently lives in Atlanta, GA where she runs her business Salted, LLC. These napkins are designed by Amy, sourced and made by her friends in Augusta, GA.
When you see these new napkins, may it remind you that you are welcome at the Lord’s Table. And not just you, but all those you love, and all those no one loves. We all get the same, beautiful seat.
